Our Communities

Communities of the South Kootenay

The South Kootenay region consists of five communities, each with its' own unique 'personality', history, micro-climate and demographics. The communities share common traits such as the friendly, safe and relaxed atmosphere that encompassess you from the first time you visit the region. As the communities are are geographically close together, community events and celebrations draw residents from all the outlying communities.

Community Pride

The communities of the South Kootenay take pride in family, lifestyle, sport and the many volunteers who dedicate their time to better their communities. Dedicated volunteers beautify the City of Trail every year for Communities in Bloom, and the National award winning city now competes internationally. Rossland volunteers manage over 170Km of mountain bike trails, and Fruitvales May Days celebrations are volunteer driven. When the South Kootenay hosts an event there is no shortage of locals to step up to the plate to volunteer. It's the South Kootenay way!

Community Safety

Young children still walk with their friends to school unaccompanied; there's no need to double bolt doors and bar windows. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police provide policing services for the South Kootenay, and the City of Trail funds a Crime Prevention Officer and two additional officers for the unit. In total the City of Trail funds 14 of the 24 officers for the detachment with the stated goal of making "Trail the safest city in Canada".

The region boasts well many equipped and modern recreation facilities and sporting clubs thrive in the South Kootenay.
