Most of the smaller towns in the South Kootenay have a physician, dentist and drugstores, but the main concentration of specialists, physicians and health services are located in Trail. The Medical Services Building in downtown Trail houses the offices of most of the clinics. The medical professionals here are generally here for the same reasons; -the lifestyle and opportunity within a welcoming community.
Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital
The Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) is located in Trail and operates as the center of health care for the region. KBRH serves 80,000 West Kootenay residents and, not including physicians, employs 650 people with an annual budget of $30 million. KBRH has 70 physicians including 35 family practitioners and 35 specialists. KBRH provides modern technological diagnostic equipment including a CAT Scanner, Renal Unit, ICU as well as a large range of treatment programs.
The hospital provides 24-hour emergency services, general surgery, internal medicine, Orthopedics, Psychiatry and High-level laboratory (level three) and radiology/diagnostic imaging services. It is a friendly newly renovated building with friendly caring staff. For 2010 a major modernization to the pediatrics and maternity floor as well as construction of a medivac heliport are slated to begin.
