Sports & Recreation Environment

The South Kootenay is blessed with an abundance of first rate recreational facilities far beyond what might be expected for a community of this size. There is truly something for every age group, activity or preference. The natural surroundings provide plentiful opportunities to delight outdoor enthusiasts with camping, fishing, hunting and hiking. Many lakes, rivers and streams beckon with unrestricted access for water recreation. From golfing and kayaking in summer to skiing in winter, every season provides plenty of opportunities for enjoyable activities.

BC's Number One Sports Town

Trail is known as the "Home of Champions", but it has also earned the title of "BC's Number One Sports Town". Trail honours their athletes on the prominent "Home of Champions Monument" on the busiest downtown street, and a block away is the Sports Hall of Memories that showcases memorabilia from Trail's rich sport heritage. Some of the well know sporting heroes include: Jason Bay. Lauren Bay, Adam Deadmarsh, Dallas Drake, Steve Tamellini, Ray Ferraro, Barret Jackman, Nancy Greene Raine, Kerrin Lee Gartner, and many, many more. Trail has hosted the BC Summer Games, the BC Disabled Games, the BC Senior Games, and for a second time, the BC Winter Games. Trail is one of the few communities who can lay claim to hosting all four BC Games, and truly is, "BC's #1 Sports Town". Not bad for a town of just over 7,000!

Facilities

In excess of 100 facilities invite participants as well as spectators to take part in serious sport events or just join in recreational activities for the enjoyment of it. Each town in the South Kootenay has abundant recreation programs, facilities, special events and even schools. All facilities are well utilised, and here you will find hockey arenas, swimming pools, gymnasiums, rec centres, fitness centres, ball parks, curling rinks, bocce pits and most other facilities you can conceive. There are abundant organized team sports and drop-in fitness sessions ranging from hockey (a local staple), baseball and swimming to pilates, dance, and gymnastics and just about every thing in between.

Not only are the facilities, hiking and biking trails, and venues superbly maintained by the locals, but you can get all the latest gear you need at the local shops. Shopping for sporting equipment is a unique experience as staff and store owners are generally experts in their field, know the area and what it has to offer, and will provide you with great advice and information; -look for them out there after they finish work!
