Trail

The City of Trail

Trail is poised on the banks of the mighty Columbia River at 440m (1,444’) in elevation and is the economic backbone of the region. The 7,237 residents of Trail are well served by most major financial institutions, the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, businesses and big box retailers. Air access between the Trail Airport and Vancouver is provided by Pacific Coastal Airlines with two daily flights between the cities. Trail is also home to Teck Cominco Metals Ltd, the Trail Memorial Centre and sports complex, Selkirk College and the Trail and District Aquatic Centre.

Cultural Heritage

Trail has a significant Italian community as pre and post World War II Italian immigrants were largely responsible for shaping the community’s social and cultural structure. Generations of master Italian rock masons created beautiful walls of stone for homes, gardens, yards, roads and covered walkways. Today the terraced homes, rock walls and bright gardens tucked into the winding streets of “Little Italy" delight visitors from around the globe.

Communities in Bloom

Trail now competes with the most beautiful cities in the world in the annual Communities in Bloom competition. In 2003 the City of Trail received a 4/5 blooms in the provincial competition. In 2004 the city received 5/5 blooms, and in 2006 Trail won the national award in the 5,001 to 10,001 population category. In 2007 Trail began competing in the international section of the competition and will continue to do so. Trail’s Communities in Bloom committee is run solely by dedicated volunteers who continue to beautify the city year after year.
